Kadishub Sumut, Dr. Agustinus Panjaitan, mengatakan, pendekatan tactical urbanism memungkinkan perubahan cepat dan berdampak nyata dalam menciptakan ruang publik yang lebih manusiawi. “Melalui langkah-langkah sederhana namun strategis, kita merancang Terminal Binjai agar tidak hanya tertib secara fungsi, tapi juga menjadi tempat yang nyaman untuk masyarakat,” kata Agustinus kepada wartawan, Jumat (8/11/2024).
Lebih jauh Agustinus menyampaikan, proyek ini dimulai dengan melibatkan ide-ide segar dari kalangan akademisi lewat kompetisi desain yang diikuti mahasiswa dari berbagai universitas. Desain pemenang kemudian diadopsi sebagai konsep utama, dan sosialisasi intensif pun dilakukan bersama para pemangku kepentingan, termasuk operator bus, pedagang, serta masyarakat di sekitar terminal.
Transformasi ini kini memasuki fase pembangunan dengan berbagai peningkatan fasilitas. Di antaranya, penambahan shelter untuk kenyamanan penumpang, jalur pedestrian untuk pejalan kaki, serta pemasangan zebra cross yang mengedepankan keamanan penyeberangan. Guiding block juga dipasang di jalur pedestrian sebagai penanda bagi penyandang disabilitas, khususnya tunanetra. Agar lalu lintas lebih tertib, marka parkir diatur ulang untuk bus, angkot, dan sepeda motor.
Lebih jauh Agustinus mengatakan, program ini juga mendukung pembangunan angkutan umum massal berbasis jalan yakni Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Mebidang, yang akan melayani hingga Terminal Ikan Paus Binjai.
“Kami berharap peningkatan prasarana terminal ini akan memberikan kenyamanan lebih bagi para penumpang, sehingga mendorong penggunaan angkutan umum yang lebih tinggi,” ucap lulusan UGM itu.
Dalam upaya menciptakan suasana sejuk, ruang terbuka hijau sedang dibangun untuk menambah unsur alami di lingkungan terminal. Dishub Sumut juga menggandeng warga sekitar dalam pengecatan jalur pedestrian melalui program community engagement, hal ini penting untuk menumbuhkan rasa memiliki dan tanggung jawab terhadap fasilitas umum ini.
Agustinus menambahkan, proyek ini ditargetkan selesai pada November 2024. Setelah rampung Terminal Binjai diharapkan menjadi lebih dari sekadar terminal, tetapi ruang publik representatif yang nyaman dan berkelanjutan, sekaligus contoh bagaimana kolaborasi antara pemerintah daerah dan mitra internasional dapat membawa perubahan positif bagi masyarakat.***
