HANYA segelintir tokoh di negeri ini yang dipanggil guru bangsa. Ahmad Syafii Maarif salah satunya. Pemikiran dan komitmennya atas persatuan, nilai-nilai kebangsaan, pluralisme terus berkumandang dari sosok yang juga dijuluki muazin bangsa ini.

Muazin yang secara harfiah artinya pengingat. Sosok yang kerap mengingatkan pentingnya merawat keutuhan Indonesia dengan mengedepankan prinsip-prinsip bhinneka tunggal Ika. Menjadi oase bagi bangsa ini, di tengah kegersangan penghormatan terhadap kemajemukan dan hiruk-pikuk intoleransi di negeri ini. Kini Buya Syafii telah berpulang, usai menutaskan hikmatnya di dunia dengan paripurna. Meninggal dalam usia 86 tahun, kemarin, di RS PKU Muhammadiyah, Gamping, Kabupaten Sleman.

Bangsa ini telah kehilangan teladan, patut rasanya bagi seluruh negeri ini berduka. Semasa hidup, Buya dikenal sebagai pengingat, muazin ketika sejumlah pihak kerap berpotensi melanggar batas moral kebangsaan dan keagamaan. Tidak pandang siapa pun itu, Buya tidak pernah segan untuk melontarkan kritiknya. Ia dengan tegas dan jelas mengkritik upaya pelemahan KPK oleh para elite negeri ini. Begitu pun ketika mengkritisi pemerintahan Presiden Jokowi periode kedua yang remuk.

Padahal, Buya merupakan pendukung Presiden Joko Widodo di periode pertama. Disebutnya, saat ini pemerintahan diwarnai perilaku korupsi yang menggurita, tata pemerintahan berantakan, hingga sengkarut keuangan di perusahaan BUMN yang terancam bangkrut. Independensinya sebagai cendekiawan tentu membuat Buya leluasa secara lantang untuk menyerukan koreksi dan evaluasi bangsa ini.

Indepensi dari kepentingan inilah yang dijaga selama hidupnya. Bahkan enggan menukarnya dengan jabatan penting sebagai Ketua Dewan Pertimbangan Presiden. Begitu pun komitmennya dalam memandang kehidupan beragama, Buya selalu merujuk pernyataan Wakil Presiden pertama Indonesia Mohammad Hatta, yang menyatakan tidak rela melihat Islam Indonesia seperti gincu, sibuk dengan seremoni tetapi kehilangan subtansi, mengobarkan ‘allahu Akbar’ sambil merusak dan menghujat orang lain.

Sebagai salah satu intelektual muslim terkemuka, Buya menegaskan bahwa Islam menghargai kemajemukan itu dan menyuruh semua komponen masyakat bekerja sama berbuat kebajikan demi kepentingan bersama.

Penegasan sikap terhadap moderasi beragama. Dan tentu yang terekam di memori publik, yakni ketika dirinya kerap melontarkan pendapat bahwa Mantan Gubernur DKI Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama tidak melakukan penistaan agama dan tidak boleh dipenjara dengan pasal penistaan agama. Sebuah gambaran dan pesan yang tegas dan jelas bagaimana seharusnya kehidupan beragama harus dibangun dalam negara kesatuan Republik Indonesia.

Hanya dengan menjaga multikulturalisme, maka Indonesia akan tegak berdiri hingga satu hari menjelang kiamat, seperti yang dicita-citakan Buya. Buya tidak hanya berkontribusi dalam pemikiran, namun juga keteladanan hidup. Nama besar kerap diidentikkan dengan gaya hidup yang mewah, tidak begitu dengan Buya. Ia masih bersepeda, masih naik kereta dan hidup bersahaja.

Buya Syafii juga pernah viral pada Agustus 2018 lalu lantaran potretnya yang sedang menunggu kereta di Stasiun Tebet. Kesederhanaan Buya Syafii juga terekam saat ia tertangkap kamera tengah mengayuh sepeda di sebuah jalanan kompleks perumahan. Sebuah anutan yang membuat Buya menjadi tua dengan terhormat, serta disebut sebagai tokoh bangsa yang sejati.

Menjadi lilin kewarasan bagi bangsa Indonesia yang kita cintai ini. Pemikiran Buya mengenai Islam dan masalah-masalah kenegaraan sangat penting untuk dijadikan rujukan bagi membangun masa depan bangsa. Meski pengabdianmu pada Muhammadiyah, Islam, dan Indonesia telah tuntas paripurna, tentu doamu tidak akan pernah putus untuk masa depan Indonesia. Doakan kami, yang tersisa di negeri ini mampu meneruskan komitmen kebangsaan dan keteladananmu.
